(WTVO/WQRF)--The IceHogs and overtime hockey go together. The boys had yet another one Saturday night at the BMO Center, and for the second time in four nights they'll pulled out the win. They beat the Colorado Eagles 3-2.

Wednesday night it was Rocco Grimaldi who had the game winner in the extra session against Manitoba. This time it was David Gust who came through causing the hometown crowd of 5,360 to erupt in cheers. Gust started the play the led to his goal by laying out on the defensive end in front of Arvid Soderblom to block a shot by the Eagles. Gust then raced to the other end where he took a centering pass from Jakub Galvas and while falling Gust backhanded the puck into the net past Justus Annunen. It was Gust's 25th goal of the season.

The IceHogs' first goal of the night was scored by Zach Jordan in the first period. An even-strength goal for his first goal as an IceHog. Luke Philp kept up his hot scoring pace by adding a power play goal in the second period on a deflection. For Philp it was his 21st goal of the season.

Soderblom delivered 33 saves to earn the win.

Fighting Illini downed by Arkansas 73-63 in Round 1 https://www.mystateline.com/sports/local-sports/arkansas-holds-off-illinois-73-63-with-big-defensive-effort/ Fri, 17 Mar 2023 00:17:42 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1262452 DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ricky Council IV scored 18 points and Arkansas survived some anxious moments in the second half against an Illinois team that wouldn't go away, holding on to beat the Illini 73-63 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

Devo Davis had 16 points for the eighth-seeded Razorbacks, who used relentless defense and rebounding to build big leads but couldn't get comfortable until the final minute. Arkansas (21-13) faces top-seeded Kansas on Saturday in the second round of the West Region.

Terrence Shannon Jr., held scoreless the first 16 minutes, finished with 20 points to lead the Illini (20-13). It was the first time in five tournament appearances since 2011 that Illinois didn't make it out of the first round.

The Razorbacks were up by double digits in the middle of the first half, but no lead has been safe this season. In seven games they blew leads with scoring droughts of five minutes or longer.

That didn't happen this time, though it looked like it could when Arkansas failed to land what could have been the knockout punch with 2 1/2 minutes to play. Anthony Black intercepted Coleman Hawkins' cross-court pass and Council missed the fast-break dunk when he would have been better served to lay it in. The blown play left Arkansas coach Eric Musselman flailing his arms and screaming.

“We were in this position many times before,” Council said. “We would be up 10, up 12 at halftime, and it starts dwindling down and the other team takes the lead. So just keep that mindset we got to win the game. We all wanted to win, and just keeping our foot on the gas and not giving up. Coach gave us positive energy and we gave positive energy to each other, so we just didn’t let up. We ended up extending the lead.”

Council atoned for his missed dunk with a layup to end a 4-minute, 13-second scoring drought, and his two free throws with 1:18 left put the Razorbacks up 68-57.

“We were able to survive their run in the second half, and obviously 22 for 29 from the foul line, shooting 76% in a win-or-go-home game. John Daly will be happy,” Musselman said, referring to the pro golfer and big Razorback fan. “He gives me texts after every game about our free-throw shooting. So I’m sure he will give me a positive text tonight.”

Arkansas, which has reached the Elite Eight the past two years, led by as many as 14 points in the first half and went to the locker room ahead 36-26 following a scrambling play under the basket where Kamani Johnson battled three Illinois players for a loose ball.

The play defined the hardscrabble contest. Jackson got the ball and muscled it into the basket. Nick Smith Jr. was there to celebrate as Johnson turned to go upcourt, playfully pushing his teammate in the chest. Johnson slipped and fell and exchanged smiles with Smith when he got up. A timeout followed, and the Arkansas faithful began a raucous “calling of the hogs,” putting some extra oomph into their “Wooooo. Pig. Souie!”

Arkansas' defense was on point from the outset, holding the Illini to 28% shooting in the first half and 38.5% for the game. The Hogs scored 19 points off Illinois' 17 turnovers.

“I thought their defense early was the difference,” Illini coach Brad Underwood said. “We had a hard time getting into offense, and then every time we made a run we missed a layup, we turned it over, or missed free throws.”

BIG PICTURE

Illinois: The Illini dropped to 1-8 all-time against Southeastern Conference teams in the NCAA Tournament. Matthew Mayer, who won a national championship with Baylor in 2021 and was the Illini’s second-leading scorer this season, missed all six of his shots and was held to two points.

Arkansas: The Razorbacks are now 6-1 against the Big Ten in the tournament since 1983 and set up for another deep run if they can knock off the Jayhawks.

Freeport's Zeke Vandenburgh performs for NFL scouts at Northwestern's Pro Day https://www.mystateline.com/sports/nfl/freeports-zeke-vandenburgh-performs-for-nfl-scouts-at-northwesterns-pro-day/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 03:56:32 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1260242 EVANSTON, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--We all look forward to the NFL Draft with anticipation each year. One Freeport man is especially interested this year, because he could be selected. He's Zeke Vandenburgh. Tuesday was this former Pretzel's shot to perform in front of NFL scouts at Northwestern's Pro Day.

Pads and a helmet weren't necessary for this event. This was all about Vandenburgh showing off his speed, his quickness, and his lateral movement, all with NFL scouts watching inside Northwestern's mammoth Ryan Fieldhouse.

"It's not necessarily stressful just because you look forward to this your whole life you know, but it's definitely training for the Underwear Olympics,” said Vandenburgh. “It's not like training for a football player."

Vandenburgh did his weightlifting and his jumping drills at Illinois State's Pro Day last week where he played for the Redbirds. He wanted to do his running and movement drills at Northwestern because of its indoor facility and turf.

"I thought it went well. It was good to get in front of all 32 teams, and I thought I put together a good day. It's just all in God's hands at this point."

Vandenburgh had an eye-popping final season playing linebacker for Illinois State last fall. He won the Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive player in the nation in the Football Championship Subdivision for Division One. His 14 sacks led the FCS, and his 21 tackles-for-loss were the second most in the nation. He provided NFL scouts with a lot of great film, but Vandenburgh knows that they still want to see what he can do in these Pro Day situations.

"You just hope that you check all the boxes in this process, so that they can look at your film and say the numbers validate the film and judge you based on your film, because even if you have a great year you can have some red flags in your testing in terms of you're not very athletic. Then you can just be a great college player and your game won't translate. It's really nice to have film to validate me as a player, that they can always base my draft stock off of that."

What type of player could Vandenburgh be at the NFL level?

"I think I put a great effort. Explosive off the ball. I play physical football, and I think I've got a great knack for where the ball is going to be and a great football IQ where I can decipher offenses and know what's coming before it comes."

"I've always had this dream, and I've always believed in myself. I have a lot of people around me that believe in me.”

Vandenburgh was taken in the recent USFL Draft by the Birmingham Stallions, but he says the USFL is only a fallback plan at the moment.

Vandenburgh has a lot on his plate right now. He's getting married this Saturday.

Chicago Bears lose running back David Montgomery; add Travis Homer https://www.mystateline.com/sports/nfl/nfl-chicago/chicago-bears-lose-running-back-david-montgomery-add-travis-homer/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 03:25:16 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1260229 ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--The Chicago Bears will be seeing a lot of running back David Montgomery next season, in a Detroit Lions uniform. Montgomery has agreed to a free agent deal with the Lions. It's reported to be a three-year contract worth $18 million.

Montgomery rushed for 801 yards last season, his fourth straight season of gaining at least 800 yards on the ground. He also scored five rushing touchdowns and one touchdown receiving.

In Detroit, Montgomery will team with DeAndre Swift as a one-two punch in the backfield.

The Bears countered Montgomery's move by adding former Seattle Seahawks' running back Travis Homer on a two-year, $4.5 million dollar deal. Don't get too excited about that move Bears' fans. Homer has done next to nothing in his four NFL seasons. Last season he rushed for only 74 yards on 19 carries. He did not score a touchdown.

Rocco Grimaldi's added scoring touch a welcome addition to the Rockford IceHogs https://www.mystateline.com/sports/icehogs/rocco-grimaldis-added-scoring-touch-a-welcome-addition-to-the-rockford-icehogs/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 02:36:45 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1259208 ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)-- The Rockford IceHogs will play three home games this week, giving us our first in-person look at all the new guys who were added at the trade deadline. One of them is forward Rocco Grimaldi who was picked up in a trade with the San Diego Gulls.

Grimaldi is one of the elite scorers in the AHL. This season he's averaging better than a point a game, and he's already set a career season high with 57 points.

"I've been playing at a good level, especially this past month,” said Grimaldi after a recent practice. “I feel like I've taken it to another level too. I've been doing a lot of good stuff on the ice and working off the ice trying to watch more video and figure some things out, and it's helped a lot this month."

Grimaldi's 57 points this season rank seventh best in the entire AHL. His 27 goals tie him for second in the league.

"I'm 30 years old, but I feel like I'm 20, and I've got a lot of years ahead of me."

For now the IceHogs hope Grimaldi has some good months ahead of him, so he can help them get into the Calder Cup playoffs and then do some damage in the playoffs. The IceHogs know well what Grimaldi can do. They used to face him all the time last season when he played for the Milwaukee Admirals. He averaged better than a point per game for them too.

"He's a really, really good player at any level,” said IceHogs head coach Anders Sorensen. “I know myself I used to have nightmares about him the last couple years when he was in Milwaukee, and every time you were on the ice you hold your breath."

Grimaldi has NHL experience. He has played in 203 NHL games scoring 67 points with the Panthers, Predators and Avalanche.

The IceHogs got him from San Diego for future considerations. He was one of several new additions at the trade deadline. Right now, Grimaldi is trying to develop chemistry with all of his new teammates ASAP.

"When I'm play with new guys, I try to look at how they play. What spots they're typically in. I don’t need people to adapt to how I play. I can adapt to how they play. I think if you’re a really good player that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

"I'm here to help this team go as far as it can."

(WTVO/WQRF)--The Chicago Bears have salary cap room, the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles don't, so linebacker T.J. Edwards will be wearing a Bears uniform next season.

It's a homecoming for Edwards who's a native of Lake Villa, a far northwest suburb of Chicago. He played high school football at Lake Villa Lakes High School. He played college football at Wisconsin, but he went undrafted in 2019.

Edwards developed into one of the NFL's leading tacklers the last two seasons. Last season he was sixth in the league in total tackles with 159. He also had two sacks and ten tackles-for-loss, but because the Eagles have salary cap issues, they are forced to let some key players walk away from their NFC Championship team.

In 2021 Edwards had 130 tackles and one sack. He's 26 years old. He'll be entering his fifth NFL season with the Bears.

(WTVO/WQRF) — The votes are in, and the brackets are set. For the first time since 2003, both the Illinois men's and women's basketball teams are going dancing in the same season.

The men are back in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.

They are headed to Des Moines, Iowa as the No. 9 seed set to face No. 8 Arkansas in the first round. That game is Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

The Razorbacks are coming off a quarterfinal loss to Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament. The Illini finished the regular season at 20-12, they are also coming off a loss. That came to Penn State in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

For the first time in 20 years, and in her first year as head coach, Shauna Green has led the Illinois women back to the big dance.

It's a bit of a shock where they are going though...as the Illini will to have to play in the First Four on Wednesday in South Bend, Ind.

Illinois (22-9), an 11 seed, will take on Mississippi State (20-10) for a chance to face off with No. 6 Creighton.

Hogs secure point in 2-1 OT loss to Griffins https://www.mystateline.com/sports/local-sports/hogs-secure-point-in-2-1-ot-loss-to-griffins/ Sat, 11 Mar 2023 03:58:31 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1257004 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Rockford IceHogs dropped a 2-1 contest in overtime to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday night at Van Andel Arena. Bobby Lynch netted his ninth goal of the season in the IceHogs’ league-leading 21st overtime period.

Coming off his game-winning shootout goal against the Laval Rocket on Mar. 4, IceHogs forward Morgan Adams-Moisan dropped the gloves with Griffins defenseman Wyatt Newpower at 2:17 to ignite the Friday night action.

Nearing the end of what appeared to be a scoreless first period, defenseman Louis Crevier was charged with a two-minute interference penalty, and Grand Rapids went on the power play with 1:29 left in the initial frame. After Griffins forward Matt Luff fired a shot from the right circle, forward Joel L’Esperance cleaned up the rebound and chipped a shot past Rockford goaltender Arvid Soderblom at 18:45 to take a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Forward Bobby Lynch tied the contest 1-1 on the Hogs’ third man advantage in the final frame with a highlight reel-worthy between-the-legs goal at 9:15. When forward Rocco Grimaldi’s shot missed high over the crossbar, Lynch was ready on the edge of the crease and knocked the loose puck between his legs and past Griffins netminder Alex Nedeljkovic. Grimaldi recorded his first point as an IceHog with the assist.

The Griffins stunned the IceHogs only 17 seconds into the overtime period when Grand Rapids defenseman Jared McIsaac caught a centering pass and angled the puck into the net to earn the 2-1 win. Soderblom marked 31 saves on 33 Grand Rapids shots but was tagged with the overtime loss, and Nedeljkovic turned away 29 of 30 Rockford shots for the victory.

The next home game for Rockford is Wednesday, March 15 against the Manitoba Moose at 7 p.m.

Fred VanVleet fined $30K for cursing out NBA refs https://www.mystateline.com/news/local-news/fred-vanvleet-fined-30k-for-cursing-out-nba-refs/ Fri, 10 Mar 2023 15:33:08 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1256409 TORONTO, Canada (WTVO) — Toronto Raptors star Fred VanVleet was fined $30,000 by the NBA after an expletive-laden tirade against referee Ben Taylor after a loss to the LA Clippers on Wednesday.

Vanvleet received a technical foul from referee Ben Taylor in the third quarter against the Clippers and was visibly upset when speaking to reporters after the game.

“I thought Ben Taylor was f***ing terrible tonight. I think that on most nights, you know out of the three, there’s one or two that just f*** the game up. It’s been like that a couple of games in a row,” VanVleet said.

“There’s a fine line, obviously, I understand that,” VanVleet said. “But I think the jurisdiction and the power trip that we’ve been on this year with some of our officials in this league is getting out of hand. And I’ll take my fine for speaking on it, but … this is f*** ridiculous.”

According to ESPN, on Thursday, VanVleet reiterated his frustration, saying, "Speaking for a lot of guys, obviously, I was frustrated, emotional. But there are a lot of people that feel that way. Hopefully going forward we see some change for the better, the betterment of the game. It was a little emotional, a tough loss, things not going our way, got caught up in the moment a little bit.

"You live and you learn and you move on. It came out authentic, it came out in real time. I wouldn't have done that if I felt like I had another option or outlet. I felt like I've exhausted my options this season, many different occasions. It is just one of those things, I am human."

New additions should boost the IceHogs' playoff hopes https://www.mystateline.com/sports/icehogs/new-additions-should-boost-the-icehogs-playoff-hopes/ Wed, 08 Mar 2023 04:20:15 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1253751 ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--The IceHogs felt like they were a playoff hockey team before the NHL trade deadline. Now, after a flurry of deals at the deadline last week, they feel like they're in an even better position to make a postseason run.

The IceHogs' practice Tuesday at the Riverview Ice House felt a little like training camp. With so many news guys on the ice, they were simply trying to get to know each other.

"There's a lot of new faces, but all the new guys that have came in, they're great guys, and they look like really good players on the ice, and they're great guys off the ice,” said IceHogs’ forward Mike Hardman.

Players who were subtracted from the team at the trade deadline included Adam Clendening, Dylan Sikura, Josiah Slavin and Dylan Wells.

The newcomers who have arrived include veteran goaltender Anton Khudobin from one of the Hogs' division rivals the Texas Stars, and two former San Diego Gulls players defenseman Hunter Drew and forward Rocco Grimaldi. Grimaldi ranks second in the AHL in goals scored and seventh in the league in points.

Those two guys go from a last place team in San Diego, to a playoff contender in Rockford.

Grimaldi was surprised to be traded.

“I was shocked. I expected that I was probably going to finish the year there, and we probably weren't going to make the playoff, so I was going to be done in 15 games, and all of a sudden now you're in a playoff push, so it's pretty cool."

Khudobin says he thought something might happen, and then it did. "The general manager called me from here, Bernie (Mark Bernard) and he said you're going to Rockford. That's the plan.”

“We went on the ice for the first time today (for practice). It was fun. It was a hard practice. I enjoyed everything quite well."

Obviously, the Blackhawks were trying to stockpile draft picks up at that level, but what do all the moves at the AHL level with the IceHogs’ signal about what the Blackhawks expectations are for the Hogs for the rest of this season?

"I think our expectations is to make the playoffs and make a run,” said IceHogs coach Anders Sorensen. “I think they tried to put us in a position where we can do that."

IceHogs general manager Mark Bernard pulled the trigger on some of the trades including the one that landed Grimaldi.

"That's something I've been working on here for the last three or four weeks. I finally was able to convince the San Diego team to trade him our way. I'm very happy that we were able to get him.

Bernard says with Grimaldi the IceHogs have added a premier scorer. With the additions of Drew and defenseman Andy Welinski who was part of the Patrick Kane trade, they've added more size and defense, and with the addition of Khudobin the IceHogs now have as good of depth at goaltender as any team in the league.

"We're looking to make a good push here this spring and go far in the playoffs,” said Bernard. “I think these players can definitely help us do that."

We won't get to see the news guys in game action in Rockford until next Wednesday. The Hogs two games this weekend will be on the road.

(WTVO/WQRF)--The NIU 4A Super-Sectional left the Auburn Knights feeling anything but super. On this night they were no match for Illinois' #1 ranked Class 4A team Lisle Benet Academy. The Knights lost to the Redwings 67-33.

Rakim Chaney knocked down a three-point shot right off the bat for Auburn, but it was pretty much all downhill from there. The Redwings' used their size and leaping ability to throw down dunks, and to swat away Auburn shots. The Redwings knocked down shots from behind the arc. Most importantly the Redwings didn't let the Knights turn the game into a track meet.

Auburn finishes its season with a record of 23-13. Benet Academy improves to 34-1. The Redwings will head to Champaign this weekend.

The Crusaders were down one point as the final seconds ticked away. They had the ball in the hands of their All-State guard Walt Hill Jr. Hill rushed a deep three-point shot from the sideline while well-defended. It struck the front of the rim and bounced away and with it so went the Crusaders' season.

This is the second straight year they've been ousted from the Super-Sectional in Sterling by Rockridge. The Crusaders final record is 26-10.

Family and friends welcome back RVC's national championship bowling teams https://www.mystateline.com/sports/local-sports/family-and-friends-welcome-back-rvcs-national-championship-bowling-teams/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 04:49:54 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1251873 ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--Put two more NJCAA national championships on the board for Rock Valley College. Over the weekend both the men's and women's bowling teams claimed titles.

Sunday afternoon family members and friends gathered on campus outside the PE Center to welcome the bowlers back from New York where the national competitions were held.

The women won for the second straight year. The men claimed the program's third national championship. Individually Sammantha Meyers, a Winnebago graduate, won the All-Events Championship for the women. Hononegah graduate Connor Mooney was second in the men's All-Events field.

"It feels great to be an all-events champion as well as a team champion," said Meyers. "We are a team, so I'm glad for the team as well as myself."

"As a freshman coming in and getting second in all events, I really wasn't thinking about it throughout the team event," said Mooney. I was really hoping to get a national title as a team."

"I knew they would come through and get the job done," said Tony Hall, the head coach of both RVC teams. "We practiced really hard. We prepared all year for this. It was a matter of just going there and performing."

There is more to come for both teams. Next weekend they'll compete in the USBC Sectionals in Addison hoping to qualify for the Intercollegiate Team Championships next month in Las Vegas.

Rock Valley College's district win tainted by ejections https://www.mystateline.com/sports/local-sports/rock-valley-colleges-district-win-tainted-by-ejections/ Sun, 05 Mar 2023 04:08:36 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1251465 ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--The Rock Valley College women's basketball team has advanced to the Midwest B District Championship game of the NJCAA Region IV postseason tournament. The downside is the Golden Eagles will most likely be playing it with only five players next weekend.

Saturday night at RVC in the district semifinals the Golden Eagles were dominating Kankakee Community College midway through the fourth quarter. The final outcome wasn't in doubt. RVC was well on its way to a win. They were leading by 39 points.

But a brief scuffle broke out under RVC's basket. There was some pushing and shoving. No one was injured. The problem for RVC is, all seven players who were on the bench at the time for the Golden Eagles left the bench area and went onto the court to apparently play peacemakers and prevent the situation from escalating.

Leaving the bench in basketball is a big no-no. All seven players were ejected leaving RVC to finish the game with the five players who had been on the court at the time.

RVC won the game 105-61 to advance to the District Championship game next Saturday against Morton College. However, the seven RVC players who were ejected will most likely have to sit out that game.

(WTVO/WQRF)--The Byron Lady Tigers gave it their best shot, but they came up short Saturday against a taller Breese Mater Dei team in the Class 2A State Championship game at Illinois State University.

Mater Dei's 6-5 sophomore center Alyssa Koerkenmeier towered about the Tigers. She scored 16 points in the first half helping Mater Dei grab a six-point lead. Koerkenmeier finished the game with 23 points. She also had 14 rebounds and a whopping ten blocked shots.

Mater Dei freshman Amelia Beer added 13 points.

Byron was outrebounded 43-32. The Lady Tigers shot only 26.7% from the field (16-60) due largely to Koerkenmier's defensive pressence in the paint.

Freshman guard Macy Groharing led Byron in scoring with 14 points. Senior All-State forward Ava Kultgen sored 12 points and Karsyn Bielskis added ten.

Byron ends its season with a record of 34-3.

(WTVO/WQRF)--Walt Hill Jr. has never lost a Big Northern Conference game in his four varsity seasons with the Rockford Lutheran Crusaders.

The All-State point guard makes playing basketball look effortless whether he's driving to the basket, leading a fastbreak or knocking down shots behind the arc.

Friday night had had a 19-point fourth quarter en route to a 35-point game leading the Crusaders to a 2A Sectional Championship in Johnsburg against Aurora Christian.

We shouldn't be surprised. Basketball runs in the Hill family. Walt Hill Sr. was a standout player for Rockford's Boylan Titans in the 1990s.

This week we feature Hill Jr. in our 'Overtime' spotlight segment. Watch the media player above to view this story.

Chaney's 30-point explosion ignites Auburn's Sectional Championship victory https://www.mystateline.com/sports/high-school-sports/chaneys-30-point-explosion-ignites-auburns-sectional-championship-victory/ Sat, 04 Mar 2023 06:52:54 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1251041 ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--There's something about playing on Rockford Jefferson's court that brings out the best in Rockford Auburn junior guard Rakim Chaney. Last year he came up big in a regional championship game there. Friday night he played even bigger in the Knights' 69-59 Sectional Championship win against St. Charles East.

Chaney drilled three quick three pointers early in the first quarter to help the Knights jump out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter. The Knights stretched that lead to 33-15 at halftime. They lead by 20 points much of the second half, before St. Charles East got hot from behind the arc in the fourth quarter to close the gap to ten points.

Chaney finished the game with a career-high 30 points. He made six three-point baskets in all.

"It felt really good," said Chaney. "I love playing on this court, especially after the first regional title. It just felt good stepping back here every time I get here. Like I said, in warmups it felt good, and in the game after the first shot it kept flowing."

Give credit to some great effort on the defensive end by the Knights for the win too. They've come up with back-to-back great defensive efforts in this Sectional.

"The guys did a great job, really came through," said head coach Bryan Ott. "The pressure once again I think, relentless pressure got them out of rhythm."

For the Knights, it's their first sectional championship in seven years. Auburn's record improves to 23-12. The Knights advance to the 4A NIU Super-Sectional Monday night in DeKalb. They will face Lisle Benet Academy a team with a record of 33-1. That game will tip off at 7:30.

Byron Lady Tigers to play for the state championship https://www.mystateline.com/sports/high-school-sports/byron-lady-tigers-to-play-for-the-state-championship/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 00:48:18 +0000 https://www.mystateline.com/?p=1250150 NORMAL, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF)--The Byron Lady Tigers continue their dominant postseason run. Thursday afternoon their won their Class 2A State semifinal game against Chicago Butler Prep 55-43.

The Lady Tigers led 22-13 at halftime after taking command in the second quarter by outscoring Butler 12-2. Byron opened up a 17 point lead in the third quarter before Butler made a run, but the Lady Tigers stayed poised and closed the deal.

For Byron head coach Eric Yerly, it's always been about more than wins or losses. It's about the journey, and that journey has led them to the state championship game.

"We had some tough times and we had some adversity and we learned from our mistakes, and that's typically what we do is teach growth and peak at the end of the season and you're seeing it now."

Senior Ava Kultgen again led Byron in scoring with 17 points, but she had a lot of help. Freshmen Macy Groharing and Malia Morton each scored 10 points. Senior Ella Grundstrom added 14 rebounds and seven assists.

"When I know I'm not scoring a lot, like I'm missing my shots, I have other roles to play and that turned into rebounding in the second half and that's what really led us to the bigger lead," said Grundstrum. "I find roles that aren't being taken care of and fill them instead of scoring the most points."

"We told them we felt like we were getting good shots," said Yerly. "I just slow down a little bit because we were rushing them because of the speed of the gam,e and once we got a couple to fall, I think we got more confidence. I'm just happy for the kids and really pleased at our community, I think we broke over into the other section and filled ours up. Outstanding representation for the Byron community.

"I couldn't ask for a better way to go out," said the senior Grundstrom. "You know losing last year in the sectional final against Winnebago, I mean they were a great team, but to be here my senior year along with my best friends is the way to go out."

The Byron girls came into this season arguably as one of the underdogs, but it's pretty amazing what a little chip on the shoulder can do. Now just one game stands between them and another 2A state title. They will play for the championship on Saturday at 12:45 against Breese Mater Dei. Mater Dei knocked off defending 2A state champion Quincy Notre Dame in the other semifinal game 61-54.
